HISTORY -- The SS Oronsay was the second Orient Line ship built after World War II. A sister ship to SS Orcades, she was named after one of many islands called Oronsay on the west coast of Scotland. The liner was completed in 1951 at Vickers Armstrong, Barrow-in-Furness; but several months behind schedule due to a serious fire while in the fitting-out berth. The Oronsay operated the UK to Australasia service, via the Suez Canal until 1953.

HISTORY -- The SS Chusan was a British ocean liner and cruise ship, built for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O)'s Indian and Far East Service in 1950. She was named after Chusan, a small island off China. A smaller version of the SS Himalaya, the Chusan had a gross register tonnage of approximately 24,215; and a capacity of 1,565 passengers and crew. She was built as a replacement for the ship RMS Viceroy of India, lost in the Second World War. She was approximately 646.5 feet (197.1 m) long. The Chusan is said to have brought new standards of shipboard luxury to India and the Far East.

HISTORY -- The Windsor Castle was the largest passenger/cargo mail ship operated by the Union-Castle Line on its 'Cape Mail' service to South African ports. Built in 1959, the new vessel was notable for the high standard, if conservative, design of her public rooms in a "traditional" first class and "contemporary" tourist class configuration, which by clever arrangement, afforded both classes public rooms and deck space facing forward. The spacious passenger lounges and dining rooms were designed by eminent British architects.

HISTORY -- The Arcadia was built by John Brown of Clydebank in 1954. Her sister ship was the Belfast-built Iberia of the same year. They were easily distinguishable due to different funnel tops. Arcadia operated on the UK-Australia passenger service, with increasing numbers of cruises. In 1970 she became a full time one-class cruise ship. In 1976, Arcadia was permanently based out of Sydney. She was scrapped in Taiwan in 1979.

HISTORY -- The P&O Line commissioned the Canberra to operate the combined P&O-Orient Line service between the United Kingdom and Australia. The arrival of the jet airliner had already caused a drop in demand for this service; a reduction in emigration to Australia and wars forcing the closure of the Suez Canal saw the route become unprofitable. However a refit in 1974 saw the Canberra adapted to cruising. Unusually, this transition from an early life as a purpose built ocean liner to a long and successful career in cruising, occurred without any major external alterations, and with only minimal internal and mechanical changes over the years.
