SILVER PLATED SERVING DISH FROM THE BLACK STAR LINE SHIPPING COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- From the Black Star Line this is a silver-plated serving dish which is 7" (18cm) in size including the small handles. It is in a very good condition and an early item from the company (click on the picture to see a closer view of the engraving).

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The Black Star Line (1919−1922) was a shipping line incorporated by Marcus Garvey, the organizer of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and other members of the UNIA. The shipping line was created to facilitate the transportation of goods and eventually African Americans throughout the African global economy. It derived its name from the White Star Line, a line whose success Garvey felt he could duplicate.

GLASS DISH SOUVENIR FROM THE BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY VESSEL THE UGANDA

DESCRIPTION -- Dating from the 1950's this early souvenir is a glass oblong dish from the vessel the SS Uganda and the British India Steam Navigation vessel is shown on the dish along with the name. Produced as a glass souvenir sold on board the ship the dish is 6" (16.5cm) x 3" (8.5cm) in size and is in an excellent condition.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- SS Uganda was a British steamship that had a varied and notable career. She was built in 1952 as a passenger liner, and successively served as a cruise ship, hospital ship, troop ship and stores ship. She was laid up in 1985 and scrapped in 1992.

DECORATIVE CHINA BOXED MAP DISH FROM THE VESSEL THE MV VISTAFJORD

DESCRIPTION -- From the vessel Vistafjord this is a round souvenir dish and the size is 4" (10.5cm) wide and shows on the dish 'VISTAFJORD September 6 ' September 20 1976'. It is in an as new condition and bottom marked by makers and is still in its decorative presentation box.

CONDITION -- As new/Unused

HISTORY -- On 15th May 1973, more than four months ahead of schedule, the Vistafjord was delivered to Norwegian America Line. After a naming ceremony in Oslo, she initiated her first transatlantic crossing to New York on 22nd May and later that year begun to make long distance cruise for the NAL loyal clientele, together with her sister.

SILVER PLATED NAPKIN RING FROM THE BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- Silver-plated napkin ring from the British India Steam Navigation Company which shows on it the company logo and dates circa 1940's.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- British India Steam Navigation Company ("BI") was formed in 1856 as the Calcutta and Burmah Steam Navigation Company. The company had been formed out of Mackinnon, Mackenzie & Co, a trading partnership of the Scots William Mackinnon and Robert Mackenzie, to carry mail between Calcutta and Rangoon. It became British India SN Co in 1862. Under the hand of Lord Inchcape, who had become chairman in 1913, the company became part of the P&O group of companies in 1914 through a complex amalgamation, but continued with its own identity and organisation for another nearly 60 years until 1972, when it was entirely absorbed into P&O.

HISTORY -- Ellerman Lines was a UK cargo and passenger shipping company that operated from the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. It was founded in the late 19th century, and continued to expand by acquiring smaller shipping lines until it became one of the largest shipping firms in the World. Setbacks occurred through heavy losses to its merchant fleet in the First and Second World Wars but were overcome in each case.

HISTORY -- Ellerman Lines was a UK cargo and passenger shipping company that operated from the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. The company suffered from competition and modernising trends in the shipping industry that occurred in the second half of the 20th century. Its shipping assets were subsequently sold off to larger companies until the name was dropped in 2004, and Ellerman finally ceased its long association with shipping.

BUTTER DISH FROM THE ELLERMAN LINE STEAM SHIP COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- From the Ellerman Line shipping company this is a butter dish of the type as used on board ships dining tables. The item dates from the 1960's and shows on it the company emblem and the size is 3" (8.5cm) wide. Another great condition item from a set of Ellerman Line china available.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The company was incorporated in 1892, by the businessmen John Ellerman, Christopher Furness and Henry O'Hagan, who bought the assets of the Liverpool based shipping firm Frederick Leyland and Co Ltd. The company started with an initial capital of 800,000 to buy the fleet of 22 vessels from the executors of Frederick Leyland, the former head of Frederick Leyland and Co. Ellerman was initially the managing director, and Furness the chairman, but Ellerman had taken on the role of chairman himself by 1893.
