HISTORY
-- The Italian Lineor Italia Line, whose official name was Italia di Navigazione S.p.A., was a passenger shipping line that operated regular transatlantic services between Italy and the United States, and Italy and South America. During the late 1960s the company turned to running cruises, and from 1981 it became a global freight operator.

RARE DINING DESSERT BOWL FROM THE ESSO OIL TANKERS COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- Dessert bowl from the Esso Oil Tankers Company and was an as used on board item, and is bottom marked with the makers crest (click on the picture to see a close up of the item).

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- Esso began life as the Anglo American Oil Company in 1888. It was the first foreign affiliate of John D Rockefeller's US company the Standard Oil Trust. It had a head office at Bishopsgate, London, and a depot at Purfleet in Essex. The depot stored paraffin being shipped from New York for use in lamps throughout England.

HISTORY
-- Ellerman Lineswas a UK cargo and passenger shipping company that operated from the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. It was founded in the late 19th century, and continued to expand by acquiring smaller shipping lines until it became one of the largest shipping firms in the World. Setbacks occurred through heavy losses to its merchant fleet in the First and Second World Wars but were overcome in each case.

DINNER PLATE FROM THE CHARENTE STEAMSHIP COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- From the Charente Steamship Company (formally Harrison Line) this is an original as used on board dining plate which is in a very good condition, showing the company crest at the top.

HISTORY
-- The Charente Steamship Company started life as the Harrison Line, officially T&J Harrison, which was a shipping line founded by the brothers Thomas and James Harrison in Liverpool, England in 1853.  It ran both cargo and passenger services, starting with the import of French brandy from Charente.  They commissioned the building of SS Gladiatorand SS Cognac which were built in 1860.  It was then the company became the Charente Steamship Company in 1871. Thomas and James Harrison were the managers.  The shipping company ceased trading in October 2000, with all remaining all rights and privileges transferred P&O Nedlloyd.

RARE SAUCER FROM THE CLAN LINE SHIPPING COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- From the Clan Line shipping company this is a rare find and is an as used in service china dining plate which is in an excellent condition and the size is 6" (15cm) wide.  Made by Asworth Brothers it shows on it the company crest/houseflag and dates from the 1950’s (click on the picture to see a close up of the crest/houseflag).

HISTORY
-- The Clan Line was a passenger and cargo shipping company that operated in one incarnation or another from the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century.  The company that would become the Clan Line was first founded as C. W. Cayzer & Company in Liverpool in 1877 by Charles Cayzer. It was set up to operate passenger routes between Britain and Bombay, India via the Suez Canal.

ORIGINAL DESIGN DINING SIDE PLATE FROM THE DONALDSON LINE

DESCRIPTION -- From the Donaldson Line this is a dining side plate produced in the original design and is in an excellent condition.  It is bottom marked with flag and is 6" (15cm) wide and dates from the 1950’s.

HISTORY
-- The Donaldson Line began running services from Glasgow to South America with sailing ships in 1858, and steamships entered the fleet in 1870. In 1874, regular services to Canada started. True passenger services began in 1905, with the conversion of Athenia to carry 130 First Class and 400 Third-Class. She was joined by Cassandra in 1906, the first purpose-built liner, and similar sisters Saturnia and Letitia in 1910/12. These four ships allowed a weekly passenger service to be operated from the Clyde to Canada.

DESCRIPTION -- From the Caledonian Steam Packet Company Limited this is a very rare to find plate which is 7" (18cm) wide and in an excellent condition, dating from the 1940’/1950’s (click on the picture to see a close up of the company emblem).

HISTORY
-- The Caledonian Steam Packet Company provided a scheduled shipping service, carrying freight and passengers, on the west coast of Scotland. Formed in 1889 to complement the services of the Caledonian Railway, the company expanded by taking over rival ferry companies. In 1973, they were merged with MacBraynes as Caledonian MacBrayne.

-- The Brocklebank Line(formally named Thos. and Jno. Brocklebank) was an English shipping linethat operated during the 19th and 20th centuries. Daniel Brocklebankfounded a shipyard in Whitehaven in 1785, and expanded in the following years into operating ships.
