CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The Bank Line was a British commercial shipping line that was established in 1905 by Andrew Weir. The company was sold to the Swire Group in 2003, eventually ceasing operations in 2009. Initially a tramp operator of sailing vessels, it developed into a major company operating shipping lines all over the world.

DESCRIPTION -- Colour photograph of the Esso tanker Company vessel the Esso Forth and is in an excellent condition.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- Back in the 1950's and 1960's, the oil companies ruled the waves, or so it seemed, with oil majors Shell and Esso each controlling hundreds of deep sea tankers through their owned and chartered fleets. For a combination of economic and regulatory reasons, the big tanker fleets, many flagged in countries like the UK and Netherlands, moved into the hands of cost efficient third party managers, and independent owners.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The company that would become the Clan Line was first founded as C. W. Cayzer & Company in Liverpool in 1877 by Charles Cayzer (see Cayzer Baronets). It was set up to operate passenger routes between Britain and Bombay, India via the Suez Canal. The next year, Captain William Irvine joined the company and it was renamed Cayzer, Irvine & Company.

DESCRIPTION -- B/W photograph of the old working vessel The Otaio which is in a great condition and one of many from our collection.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Otaio was built in 1958 by John Brown and Company (Clydebank) Limited in Clydebank. Technical Data available on Otaio indicates that she was a refrigerated cargo vessel of 13,314 gross tons with a length overall of 526 feet 1.5 inches and an insulated cargo capacity of 429,300 cubic feet. Her 2 diesel engines gave her a service speed of 17 knots. The Otaio was designed to be a cadet training ship, and she operated in this role from 1958 until 1975. She could carry up to 40 deck cadets and up to 30 engineer cadets, and their living accommodation, schoolrooms and mess were housed in the Upper Deck in the vicinity of No. 4 and No. 5 Hatches.

DESCRIPTION -- B/W photograph of the Ben Line vessel The Benlarig which is in a good condition.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Ben Line originated with the partnership of William and Alexander Thomson who went into the shipping business in 1839. They started with sailing ships and imported marble from Italy and took coal to Canada returning with timber. From 1859 the company operated routes to Singapore, China and Japan and this became its major source of business. New routes were established to the Baltic and the Canadian trade had run down by the mid-1880's.

HISTORY -- In 1895 Prince Line (1895) Ltd was formed which took over all the 14 ships of the previous single ship companies 1897 the rights to Furness Withy's Mediterranean - New York passenger / cargo service were acquired. By 1898, 38 ships were owned and the company was redesignated Prince Line Ltd.

HISTORY -- Port Line was a passenger and cargo shipping company, initially formed as the Commonwealth and Dominion Line in 1914, and in operation in one form or another until 1982.

DESCRIPTION -- B/W photograph of the Cunard Line vessel The Queen Elizabeth. The photograph is taken from our collection of over 2000 shipping photographs and it is in a very good condition and is protected in a plastic wallet.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The RMS Queen Elizabeth was an ocean liner operated by the Cunard Line and was contracted to carry Royal Mail as the second half of a two-ship weekly express service between Southampton and New York City via Cherbourg. At the time of construction in the mid-1930's by John Brown and Company in Clydebank, Scotland, she was known as Hull 552, but she was later named in honour of Queen Elizabeth, Queen Consort at the time of her launch on 27 September 1938, and in 1952 became the Queen Mother. Queen Elizabeth was a slightly larger ship with an improved design over her running mate, Queen Mary, making her the largest passenger liner ever built at that time, which was a record that would not be exceeded for fifty-six years.
