HISTORY -- The Titanic disaster isn't what ended the White Star Line, but it pretty much put an end to White Star Line Chairman, J. Bruce Ismay. Ismay was highly ridiculed by both the press and the public for surviving the disaster. The press felt Ismay, being president of the White Star Line, should have gone down with the ship as Captain Smith did. One newspaper even dubbed him "J. (Brute) Ismay." Several 1912 newspapers suggested (as some recent motion pictures have) that Ismay overrode Captain Smith's orders en-route, and ordered full speed, knowing there was ice in the area in an attempt to beat the Olympic's Atlantic crossing record. There is no hard evidence however, to support this theory.

HISTORY -- The White Star Line flag was originally the house-flag of the Aberdeen White Star Line, a company which had been founded in 1845 by Henry Threlfall Wilson and John Pilkington. Prompted by the discovery of gold in Australia the company operated a fleet of sailing clippers to cope with the rush of prospectors to the newly found goldfields. The clippers, which started sailings in 1852, operated between Liverpool and Melbourne returning to England with whale oil, seal skins, wool and, more importantly, gold.

HISTORY -- The White Star Line was founded in September 1869 as the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. From the earliest days it was to be known as the White Star Line, owing to the ships flying a red swallow-tailed flag with a white star. The company entered in the North Atlantic passenger trade soon after. The first steamer launched for the line was the Oceanic, which departed on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York March 2nd 1871.

HISTORY -- The White Star Line was bought by Thomas Ismay in 1868. His son, Bruce, took over as company director in 1899 when Thomas died. White Star was one of the first shipping lines to offer Third Class accommodation, in addition to First and Second Class. Rather than compete with the smaller and faster liners belonging to its main rival, Cunard, White Star committed to comfort and reliability, rather than to speed. This was demonstrated in its three Olympic-class liners, Olympic, Titanic and Britannic, built by the Belfast shipyard of Harland & Wolff.

HISTORY -- The White Star Shipping Line was founded in 1850 to take advantage of an increase in trade following the discovery of gold in Australia. In 1867, the White Star Shipping Line was purchased by Thomas Ismay and set up to rival Cunard in Trans-Atlantic passenger traffic. Thomas's son, Bruce, became a partner in the firm and took over as company director in 1899 when his father died. In 1902 the company was bought by wealthy American, J Pierpoint Morgan. Ismay retained his position within the firm as managing director. Morgan's money meant that the company could build large luxury liners to attract the wealthy passengers.
