AN ALBUM OF OLD PHOTOGRAPHS FROM A CRUISE ON THE METEOR

DESCRIPTION
-- Superb collection of old photographs, which shows a record of life on board the cuise ship The Meteor from many years ago, entitled 'Cruise of the Meteor'. It is dated June 23rd - July 6th 1923 and is an excellent 'picture record' of a real view and living history during that time on board.

CONDITION -- Fair

HISTORY -- The Meteor was a Cruise Ship Voyage to the 'FJORDS' and is one of the most unusual finds you are likely to come across today. The outside cover shows wear from an item that is 80 years old, but otherwise the inside and the rest is in an absolutely excellent condition. It is collectable for many reasons and the size is 9” x 13” (24cm x 33cm).

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Ben Line originated with the partnership of William and Alexander Thomson who went into the shipping business in 1839. They started with sailing ships and imported marble from Italy and took coal to Canada returning with timber. From 1859 the company operated routes to Singapore, China and Japan and this became its major source of business. New routes were established to the Baltic and the Canadian trade had run down by the mid-1880s.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Llorin Palm was owned by Palm Line which was a subsidiary of Lever Brothers, Port Sunlight on the Mersey, that's the company that make "Palmolive” soap and other well known household products. Their run was West Africa, although I did see one at Hong Kong once, but she must have been on charter or something, as I don't think even one of these could go that far off course.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The company Hunting and Pattison was set up in 1874 with offices at 38 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne. This was a ship management company with the majority ownership of the ships vested in Charles Hunting. They carried general cargo including coal, guano, timber, fruit and fish.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Bank Line was registered in 1905 by Andrew Weir. Weir originally started in ship owning in Glasgow in 1885 with sailing ships. His fleet contained sailing ships until 1912 but had already started purchasing steam ships in 1896. "Bank” had been used in the name of Weir's ships from the outset.  Bank Line operated services between Europe and the South Pacific. Bank Line lost many ships to enemy action in both WW1 and WW2. In 2003, The Bank Line (South Pacific) service was sold to The China Navigation Co Ltd (CNCo), the deepsea shipping arm of the Swire Group.

HISTORY -- The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, which is usually known as P&O, is a British shipping and logistics company which dated from the early 19th century. Following its sale in March 2006 to Dubai Ports World for 3.9 billion, it became a subsidiary of DP World; however, the P&O brand has been retained. The company was headquartered in London, in the United Kingdom; it was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
