DESCRIPTION -- Large size colour photograph of the Blue Star line vessel the Canterbury Star which shows the ship at sea.  The photograph is taken from our collection of over 2000 shipping photographs and it is in a very good condition with the size of the photograph being 10" (25cm) x 8" (20cm).

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Blue Star Line company was formally registered on 28th July 1911 and the first ships were registered with Lloyds Register of Shipping between 1912-1913. Prior to World War I, seven refrigerated ships sailed under the Blue Star Line banner, carrying eggs and other perishables to England from China.

B/W PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE BLUE STAR LINE VESSEL THE PARAGUAY STAR

DESCRIPTION -- B/W postcard sized photograph of the vessel the Paraguay Star which is in an excellent condition.

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Paraguay Star was one of four vessels built after WWII to replace tonnage lost to enemy action. They were refrigerated by brine grids cooled by Hall's CO2 compressors. Refrigerated lockers were also provided in the deck sides. Chilled beef was carried from Buenos Aires to the European market as hung carcasses on hooks and rails provided for this purpose.

Responding to the development of refrigeration technology, they built up a worldwide food importation business, particularly frozen Chinese eggs and poultry. Blue Star Line was registered on 28 July 1911, its vessels carrying imported frozen meat from South America, particularly Argentina.

OLD FRAMED PICTURE OF THE BLUE STAR LINE VESSEL THE ARGENTINA STAR

DESCRIPTION -- Old picture of the Blue Star Line vessel The Argentina Star which is framed and in a good condition. The vessel was built in 1947 and scrapped in 1972 but the picture is thought to be from an early date with the size being 8" x 6" (22cm x 17cm).

DESCRIPTION -- Large sized B/W photograph of the vessel The Paraguay Star with the overall size being 15" x 11" (39.5cm x 29cm)

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- The Paraguay Star was one of four vessels built after WWII to replace tonnage lost to enemy action. They were refrigerated by brine grids cooled by Hall's CO2 compressors. Refrigerated lockers were also provided in the deck sides. Chilled beef was carried from Buenos Aires to the European market as hung carcasses on hooks and rails provided for this purpose. With accommodation for 68 passengers she operated a regular service to South America, calling at Lisbon, Las Palmas, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo and terminating at Buenos Aires, on a seven week turnaround. Accommodation could be described as comfortable rather than luxurious by today's standards for passengers.

HISTORY -- The Blue Star Line was originally owned by the brothers William and Edmund Vestey, members of a family of Liverpool grocers. Responding to the development of refrigeration technology, they built up a worldwide food importation business, particularly frozen Chinese eggs and poultry. Blue Star Line was registered on 28 July 1911, its vessels carrying imported frozen meat from South America, particularly Argentina. The line was part of a larger financial empire including retail outlets and cold stores. In 1925 the company entered the South American passenger trade.
