SET OF EARLY PLAYING CARDS FROM THE SALLY LINE FERRY CROSSING COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- Set of playing cards from the Sally Line ferry crossing company which are in a particularly good condition.  An unusual set as all of the playing cards have on each one some useful phrases to use shown in 5 different languages if travelling in Europe.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- Sally Line was founded in 1981 by Michael Kingshott as a subsidiary of the Finland - based Rederi Ab Sally, and initially marketed as Sally Viking Line, with a livery that was nearly identical with that of Viking Line, a Baltic Sea ferry consortium that Sally was a member of.

P&O FERRIES SOUVENIR DISH

DESCRIPTION -- Early collectable souvenir plate from the P&O Ferries shipping company, which is a Poole China piece of very good quality and the size is 6" (15cm) wide showing a superb colour picture on the front.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The P&O Line had originally established ferry services in the United Kingdom in the late 1960s with services in the North Sea, these were later complemented with the acquisition of Coast Lines Ltd in 1971 and the establishment of cross channel ferry services. In the late 1970s P&O were affected by a reduction in traditional shipping activities, which saw the sale of a number of its businesses and assets.

UNUSUAL EMBROIDERED PICTURE FROM THE STENA NORMANDY SHIPPING LINE

DESCRIPTION -- Unusual find of an advert for the Stena Normandy Sealink ferry crossing service which is embroidered in different colours and is approx. 12″ (30cm) square and in a superb condition.

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- Sealink was a ferry company based in the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1984, operating services to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Isle of Wight and Ireland.

EARLY BOXED SOUVENIR BOTTLE OPENER FROM THE TOWNSEND THORESEN FERRIES COMPANY

DESCRIPTION -- Unused and as new bottle opener souvenir from the Townsend Thoresen ferry company which is boxed and an early souvenir.

CONDITION -- Unused

HISTORY -- Townsend Thoresen eventually became P&O European Ferries and as a ferry company operated in the English Channel from 1987, and after the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster, Townsend Thoresen was then renamed P&O European Ferries, until 1999 when the Portsmouth Operations became P&O Portsmouth and the Dover Operations were merged with Stena Line AB to make P&O Stena Line.

SOUVENIR CORKSCREW FROM THE VESSEL THE SS DUKE OF YORK

DESCRIPTION -- Souvenir item from the old steam vessel the SS Duke of York from the British Rail Ferries which is a souvenir corkscrew and the size is 4" (11cm) long. It shows on it the company Houseflag and the name of the vessel and is in a very good condition and dated from the 1960's (click on the picture for a close up of one of the top of the item).

HISTORY -- The Duke of York was a steamer passenger ship initially operated by the London Midland and Scottish Railway which saw service from 1935 to 1964.  She was renamed HMS Duke of Wellington for the duration of World War II.

MINI SOUVENIR BELL FROM THE VESSEL SS SARNIA

DESCRIPTION --This superb miniature bell is from the very old vessel the SS Sarnia and is in a good condition dating from the 1950's.

CONDITION -- Good

HISTORY -- TSS Sarnia was a passenger vessel built for the London and South Western Railway in 1910. During the First World War, she served in the Royal Navy as the armed boarding steamer HMS Sarnia.  Sarnia was built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, England, and launched on 9 July 1910. Propulsion was by two double ended marine boilers providing steam for a set of Parsons turbines driving three shafts. Passenger accommodations were for 186 first and 114 second class passengers supported by 48 crew.

SOUVENIR TEA STRAINER FROM THE COAST LINES VESSEL THE TSS LADY KILLARNEY

DESCRIPTION -- Unused and as new souvenir from the vessel TSS Lady Killarney from the Coast Lines which is a souvenir tea Strainer, and shows at the top the name and company houseflag (click on the picture to see a close up of the houseflag).

CONDITION -- New/Unused

HISTORY -- Coast Lines Ltd of Liverpool was formed by the merging of three companies in 1913, and was known initially by their joint names: Powell, Bacon and Hough Lines.  The name Coast Lines Ltd was adopted in 1917 when the company was taken over by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company.  After the dissolution of the Royal Mail Group in 1931, Coast Lines became independent once more under the chairmanship of Sir Alfred Read (1871-1955), who had previously been a director.

ORIGINAL 'CERTIFICATE OF DISCHARGE' FROM THE OLD COASTAL VESSEL HMS CONDOR DATED 1878

DESCRIPTION -- Original 'Certificate of Discharge' from the old 18th century vessel HMS Condor and is dated September 1878.  It is for a seaman by the name of Edwin Jones aged 37 and for service between 8th July 1878 and 12th September 1878, and the item is in a very good condition and an extremely rare find with the size being 16" x 20" (click on the picture for a close up view of the certificate).

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- HMS Condor was a Condor-class gunboat launched in 1876 and sold in 1889. She took part in the bombardment of Alexandria during the 1882 Urabi Revolt in Egypt, while under the command of Lord Charles Beresford.
