LARGE SIZE SERVING SPOON FROM THE P&O LINE

DESCRIPTION -- An as used on board piece of cutlery which is a large size serving spoon. It is in a good condition and genuine from the shipping line (click on the picture to see the P&O marking).

CONDITION -- Good

HISTORY -- The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, which is usually known as P&O, is a British shipping and logistics company which dated from the early 19th century. Following its sale in March 2006 to Dubai Ports World for 3.9 billion, it became a subsidiary of DP World; however, the P&O brand has been retained. The company was headquartered in London, in the United Kingdom.

SILVER PLATED SIDE KNIFE FROM THE P&O LINE

DESCRIPTION -- From the P&O Line this is a rare type dining side knife which dates from the early 1900's and is in an excellent condition and original from the period (click on the picture to see a close up of the company inscription).

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- P&O has a long and proud history stretching right back to 1815 when "a young man with no influence and but limited pecuniary means, opened an office in Lime Street, London and commenced business." The young man was Brodie McGhie Willcox and he was joined in his new endeavor, as ship broker and agent, by Arthur Anderson, employed by him as a Clerk. Willcox and Anderson soon became partners and with the financial backing of a Dublin ship owner, Captain Richard Bourne, the "Peninsular Steam Navigation Company" issued its first prospectus in 1835. The rest, as they say, is history and in 2012 the company celebrated 175 years of P&O's history.

IN SERVICE DESSERT SPOON FROM THE ORIENT LINE

CONDITION -- Very Good

HISTORY -- The Orient Steam Navigation Company, also known as the Orient Line, was a British shipping company with roots going back to the late 18th century. From the early 20th century onwards an association began with P&O that eventually culminated in the Orient Line being totally absorbed into that company in the 1960's. The Orient Line's beginnings can be traced back to the formation of a shipbroking company by James Thomson in 1797. The company was operating a small fleet of sailing ships by the early 19th century, and by the middle of the century they were sailing on routes all over the world.

SILVER PLATED BABY TEA-SPOON FROM THE P&O LINE

DESCRIPTION -- Extremely difficult item to locate now, this is a baby tea-spoon from the P&O Line shipping company and the size is 4" (10cm). It is an early example and is in a fabulous condition (click on the picture to see the company emblem engraved on the item)

CONDITION -- Excellent

HISTORY -- P&O first introduced passenger services in 1844, with a leisure cruise departing from Southampton to the Mediterranean. These voyages were the first of their kind and the forerunner of modern cruise holidays. The company later introduced round trips to destinations such as Alexandria and Constantinople and underwent rapid expansion in the later half of the 19th century, with its ships becoming larger and more luxurious.

HISTORY -- P&O is a British-American owned cruise line based at Carnival House in Southampton, England, and operated by Carnival UK. Originally a constituent of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company, P&O Cruises is the oldest cruise line in the world, having operated the world's first passenger ships in the early 19th Century. It is the sister company of, and retains strong links with P&O Cruises Australia. P&O Cruises was de-merged from the P&O group in 2000, becoming a subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises, which subsequently merged with Carnival Corporation in 2003, to form Carnival Corporation & plc.

HISTORY -- The British Commonwealth Line Shipping Company was originally established in 1955 when Clan Line Steamers was merged with Union Castle to form The British & Commonwealth Shipping Company, a shipping business. British & Commonwealth were the ultimate owners of British United Airways (BUA), Britain's largest wholly private, independent airline of the 1960's, as well as its subsidiaries and sister companies, including British United Air Ferries and British United Island Airways (BUIA). They were also a shareholder of Bristow Helicopters, at the time the UK's biggest helicopter company as well as one of the largest in the world, acquiring full control in 1985.

HISTORY -- The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) has a celebrated history dating back to the 1830's. It was incorporated by a Royal Charter in 1840, and its name therefore includes neither "PLC" nor "Limited". The initials "P&O" are among the most familiar anywhere, and its houseflag, older even than the Company itself, is one of the best known.

HISTORY -- The Rotterdam Lloyd company started life in 1839 as Willem Ruys, using sailing ships to trade with the Dutch East Indies and Far East. The company underwent a number of name changes: to Stoomboot Reederij "Rotterdamsche Lloyd" (Rotterdam Lloyd) in 1875, Stoomvaart Maatschappij Rotterdamsche Lloyd (Rotterdam Steam Navigation Co) in 1881 and in 1883 to N.V. Rotterdamsche Lloyd.
