Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. is a Japanese transport company headquartered in Toranomon, Minato, Tokyo. The company's main area of operations is international shipping. Its alligator logo can be seen on containers in ports around the world.
Founded as a key part of the Mitsui zaibatsu (family-owned conglomerate) during the early industrialization of Japan, the company is now independent of the zaibatsu, but remains part of the Mitsui keiretsu (group of aligned companies). Many heads of this company have wielded considerable power in Japan and abroad. One of the latest is Masaharu Ikuta, who has been appointed to head the newly privatized Japan Post.
MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines) was founded in 1964 following the merger of Osaka Shosen Kaisha (OSK) Osaka Shôsen Kabushiki-gaisha) and Mitsui Steamship Co., Ltd., formerly Mitsui Line, under the Law Concerning the Reconstruction and Reorganization of the Shipping Industry. At that time the company was the largest shipping company in Japan, capitalized at 13.1 billion, with 83 vessels aggregating 1,237 thousand metric tons deadweight (DWT).

A DINING PLATE FROM THE GERMAN VESSEL ‘MAXIM GORKI’ |

|
This item is a cup and saucer from the Russian vessel the SS Maxim Gorki. It is in a great condition and an unusual find. The items show the traditional design logo of the Maxim Gorki on them. The plate is bottom marked made in Germany due to its German connections. Click on the picture to see a close up of the company logo.
The SS Maxim Gorki was a cruise ship that was, until 30 November 2008, owned by Sovcomflot, Russia, under long-term charter to Phoenix Reisen, Germany. She was built in 1969 by Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, West Germany for the German Atlantic Line as SS Hamburg. In 1973 she was renamed SS Hanseatic. The following year she was sold to the Black Sea Shipping Company, Soviet Union and received the name Maxim Gorki in honour of the poet Maxim Gorki. On 20 August 2008 the Maxim Gorki was sold to Orient Lines. She was due to enter service with her new owners on 15 April 2009 under the name SS Marco Polo II, but in November 2008 the re-launch of the Orient Lines brand was cancelled. On 8 January 2009 the ship was sold for scrap, and she was beached at Alang, India on 26 February 2009.
Although never used as such, the ship was originally planned as a dual ocean liner/cruise ship, for service between Hamburg and New York as well as cruising. She was the first major passenger liner built in Germany since 1938. On entering service for the Black Sea Shipping Company, she became the first four-star cruise ship operated under the Soviet flag.

AS USED ONBOARD CHINA PLATE FROM THE CANADIAN STEAMSHIP Co. |

|
This is a dining plate which is an as used onboard item from the Canadian Steamship Line Shipping Company. The plate was used in service and is dated from the 1940’s. It is a Royal Worcester piece which is in a good condition and a not often found item. The size of the plate is 8" (20cm) wide.
The Canadian Steamship Line had humble beginnings in Canada East in 1845, operating river boats on the St. Lawrence River in general commerce. Subsequent growth over the years was tied to expansion of the canal system on the upper St. Lawrence River (the precursor to the St. Lawrence Seaway), and to a new Welland Canal connecting to the upper Great Lakes.
By 1924, the Canadian Steamship Line purchased its first self-unloader bulk carrier, the Collier, and also owned a shipyard in Collingwood, Ontario where the Canadian Steamship Line and competitor Lakers were being built. The Canadian Steamship Line also came into ownership of one of Canada's largest shipyards, Davie Shipbuilding, in Lauzon, Quebec for a period in the 1960s-1970s and was at one time a major passenger line on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.
