HMS Raleigh was a Hawkins-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was commissioned as part of the British North Atlantic squadron in 1921. She had a full load displacement of 12,000 tons (light, 9,700 tons), an overall length of 605 feet (184 m), and carried a complement of 700 officers and men. She was the only unit of the Hawkins class to be completed with 70,000 shp (52,000 kW) machinery, and on trials off Isle of Arran on 7–9 September 1920 reached her designed speed of 31 knots (57 km/h) at full power of 71,350 shp (53,210 kW). At half power, 35,000 shp (26,000 kW), she still managed to make 28 knots (52 km/h). After trials the ship proceeded to Devonport for completion as a flagship.
In April 1922, Sir William Christopher Pakenham was Admiral of the Royal Navy's America and West Indies Station and he designated HMS Raleigh as his flagship. Sir Arthur Bromley was captain of HMS Raleigh. It was through his negligence that the ship was lost. On August 8, 1922, Captain Bromley sped the flagship through a thick fog and ran her aground at Point Amour in Forteau Bay, Labrador. Eleven sailors were drowned in the shipwreck.

SS Canberra was an ocean liner, which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland at a cost of UK £17 million, and was launched on 16 March 1960. After the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982, which initiated the Falklands War, the Ministry of Defence requisitioned the Canberra as use as a troopship. Nicknamed the Great White Whale, the Canberra proved vital in transporting the Parachute Regiment and Royal Marines to the islands more than 9,000 miles (14,000 km) from the UK. Whilst the Queen Elizabeth 2 was held to be too vulnerable to enter the war zone, Canberra was sent to the heart of the conflict.

Built by Portsmouth Dockyard, the vessel was laid down 24 September 1931, launched 31 January 1933, and commissioned into the Royal Navy on 12 February 1934 with pennant number 20.

Neptune, with other patrolling Royal Navy heavy units, was sent to Uruguay in the aftermath of the Battle of the River Plate. She was still in transit however on December 17 when the Germans scuttled the Graf Spee.
During 1941, she led Force K, a raiding squadron of cruisers. Their task was to intercept and destroy German and Italian convoys en route to Libya. The convoys were supplying Rommel's Afrika Korps in North Africa with troops and equipment.
